Data on The Verdelho |
| Until
early this century the Verdelho was the principal wine
making grape on the island. It’s very sweet, hard or more or less
hard, elliptic or oblong, greenish-yellowish fruit that grows in small of
medium-sized (15-22 cm), generally laterally compressed and dense
bunches and ripen to a golden hue.

| These
grapes are very good to eat and produce a medium-dry wine of agreeable taste
which is considered one of the finest of Madeira. The Verdelho vines
are found in Ribeira da Janela, Funchal, Câmara de Lobos and Estreito
de Câmara de Lobos in terraces open to the sea and also in the more protected
terraces of São Vicente. |
