Verdelho
The vine permanesced almost exclusively in the Ribeira da Janela area at the time. The plan was to build scientifically controlled “viveiros” or growth stables for lack of a better term. These vines were then replanted into less traditional and experimental areas of viticulture production in Madeira..

It must be said that records show the Verdelho was the most difficult of all the vines in the governmental recuperation programme to reproduce. Only through sheer hard work and determination  do we still have the fortune of being able to expect good verdelhos in the future

The Verdelho is golden in colour, small and hard. It is classified as a semi-dry wine on a scale of sweetness. As all Madeira wines, verdelho wines are characteristically sweet, but with a touch of dryness to it. A nutty nuance is also evident. On a scale of tartaric acid levels the Verdelho (8,5) sits between the Malvasia (10,5) and the Tinta Negra Mole ((7,0). The Verdelho more closely approximates the Italian Verdia and Spanish Pedro Zimenez.
