HARVEST MODERNISATIONS

Harvesting today does not enjoy as much the festivities and folklore activities that it had entertained one or two generations ago. Today it is a more serious and commercial activity. When the grapes are harvested they are put into wicker baskets at the side of the road. Lorries come past and empty the baskets onto the back of the truck to take them to the mechanical wine presses.
A book picture of some portuguese tiles depicting the ancient wine process
Tiles characteristic of the Portuguese blue style show a “lagar” being used to press grapes, barefoot at it. This was a tradition of yesteryear, and can still be seen today if you get to know some of the locals. But you may have to help...

This is a far cry from the rustic charm found in the family cottage industries of yesteryear. Then it was quite common to see the wine pressing done by foot. This activity is still performed when grapes and must produced by the local and individual farmer do not find themselves being delivered to the big wine producing merchants.
