Historians say that Madeira wine was used for the toast at the signing of the Declaration of Independence. Madeira wine was a big favourite of George Washington. When Washington D.C. officially became the capital of America, Madeira wine joined the celebration. Washington's inauguration included raised glasses of Madeira, as well.
