THE HARD WORK OF THE "BORRACHEIRO"

Goatskin Wine Carriers at the entrance to Henriques e Henriques
Borracheiros from Câmara de Lobos on the southern part of the island arrive at the installations of Henriques & Henriques. Circa 1935.
The "Borracheiros" would move in single file, walking and sometimes running down steep rocky paths on distances up to 20 kilometres to arrive at wine lodges where the wine would be poured into large casks to begin the process of maturation.
A long and sometimes steep walk - all in single file
The “borracheiros” would walk in single file up to sometimes 20 kilometres to deliver the grape juice to be processed by the wine manufacturers. On the left, the “borracheiro” is now relegated to folk festivals and other historical festivals on Madeira. Nearly everything is carried by truck to the big wine presses.
